“La evolución de la pobreza en Argentina: crónica, transitoria, diferencias regionales y determinantes (1995-2003)”.

The evolution of poverty in Argentina shows evidence of a pronounced deterioration in the last years, which has not been uniform across regions. Using data for 1995-2003 this paper decomposes poverty into its chronic and transient components and analyzes its determinants considering regional differences. The results indicate that poverty has increased primarily due to a larger fraction of individuals in chronic poverty. Besides, transient poverty is associated with the labor status of the household head, while chronic poverty is related to structural characteristics of the household. Regional differences for these phenomena are significant.
